When Should You Replace Brake Pads?

Brake pads are one of the most common services we perform. Here’s a simple guide so you know when it’s time — and when it’s not.

Common Warning Signs

  • Squealing or screeching (wear indicators contacting the rotor)
  • Grinding metal-on-metal sound (pads are gone — stop driving if possible)
  • Vibration or pulsation when braking
  • Longer stopping distances
  • Brake warning light on the dash
  • Visible pad material less than ~3–4 mm

Typical Mileage

Most pads last 30,000–70,000 miles depending on driving style, traffic, and pad quality. Bay Area stop-and-go traffic tends to wear them faster. Hybrid vehicles often last longer because of regenerative braking.

Why Cheap Pads Can Cost More

Very cheap pads can wear rotors faster, create more dust and noise, and sometimes fade under hard use. A quality mid-range pad is usually the best value for daily driving.

G CAR'S brake pad service is $120 (pads + labor for most cars). We inspect rotors, calipers and fluid at the same time and only recommend what is needed. Book brakes online.
